Men in Nyanga Commit to Combat Gender-Based Violence

In a powerful demonstration of solidarity and resolve, men in Nyanga have taken a significant stand against the pervasive issue of gender-based violence (GBV) affecting communities across the nation. This commitment was highlighted during the annual Men’s Dialogue organized by the Etafeni Day Care Centre Trust, with this year’s theme being “Redefining Manhood from Violence to Values.”

Pledging to Change

The event, held at the Etafeni premises, saw 100 men formally pledging to cultivate positive values and reject all forms of violence. Nontombi Buthelezi, the director of Etafeni, led the pledge, emphasizing the importance of accountability in their actions. “The whole idea behind these Men’s Dialogues is to put a stop to violence where men kill other men, where men abuse women and children, and to promote positive masculinity while creating safe spaces in Nyanga and surrounding areas,” she stated.

Buthelezi’s insights reflect a profound understanding of the societal issues at play. She highlighted that the participants, many of whom are fathers, genuinely care about the wellbeing of their families and want to foster a safe environment. “Today is a significant day for us. We want them to move away from violence and help make Nyanga a safe space for everyone,” she added, reinforcing the transformative potential of such dialogues.

Sharing Challenges and Solutions

During the dialogue, participants had the opportunity to openly discuss the alarming challenges they face daily. By fostering an atmosphere of trust and support, attendees collaboratively sought solutions to these pressing issues. They delved into topics ranging from personal struggles to broader societal pressures, emphasizing the need for unity and understanding among men.

Guest speaker Reverend Mawande Lugongolo from the Lugongolo Foundation delivered a compelling address, urging men to reassess their quest for validation through destructive behavior and social norms. He pointed out that modern society, particularly through social media, places unrealistic expectations on men, leading them to engage in risky actions simply to appear relevant.

The Impact of Financial Honesty

One of the key issues raised by Reverend Lugongolo was the dishonesty that often permeates relationships, particularly regarding finances. He urged participants to embrace transparency with their partners, stressing that honest conversations about money can prevent conflicts. “If you have no money, be honest with your partner. Say you cannot afford certain things,” he advised, highlighting the importance of working towards improving one’s financial situation rather than succumbing to societal pressures.

Lugongolo’s message resonated deeply, as he underscored the pillars of ethical behavior, fairness, and responsibility among men, reinforcing the need for a shift in mindset.

The Path Towards Positive Change

Solethu Nobhala from the Amandla organization praised the event’s organizers, describing the dialogue as a pivotal starting point for positive change within the community. He encouraged participants to commit to ongoing personal development and to learn to manage their emotions effectively. “As men, we must always learn and unlearn. We live in a modern world with equal rights. This is no longer a society where women must be silent. Men must also cook, clean, and take responsibility at home,” he asserted.

Nobhala’s comments illuminate the evolving dynamics of gender roles and the necessity for men to take a more active and equitable part in household responsibilities.

Recognition and Future Opportunities

To celebrate their commitment, all participants received certificates recognizing their involvement in the dialogue. Additionally, the non-profit organization identified five men who will undergo training in the security industry, providing them with valuable skills and opening doors to employment opportunities. This initiative not only empowers individuals but also enhances community safety and well-being.

Moving Forward Together

This Men’s Dialogue serves as a pivotal moment for Nyanga, reflecting a collective determination to challenge harmful stereotypes and behaviors. Engaging in these important conversations allows men to redefine their roles in society and actively contribute to a culture of respect, safety, and positive masculinity.
