A New Era for the National Museum of African American Music
The National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM) is entering a transformative phase with the launch of an expansive strategic plan that focuses on three core pillars: Educate and Entertain, Sustainability, and National Impact. This ambitious framework not only aims to enhance the museum’s profile but also doubles its annual visitation from 125,000 to 250,000 guests, positioning NMAAM as a significant cultural authority.
Educate and Entertain: The Heart of NMAAM’s Mission
At the forefront of the new strategy is the Educate and Entertain pillar. This initiative expands NMAAM’s role by integrating comprehensive educational programming with high-energy entertainment offerings. Unique to the museum is its mission to share the unbroken narrative of African American music’s influence on both American and global cultures. Recent collaborations with Nashville’s mainstay institutions have fueled impressive attendance numbers, indicating robust community engagement.
A highlight of this pillar is the newly launched Amplify Lounge. This intimate venue provides an exciting platform for live performances and showcases emerging artists, blending learning with enjoyment. The focus on interactive cultural experiences ensures that visitors not only appreciate but also understand the profound impact of African American music.
Sustainability: Building a Strong Financial Future
The second pillar of NMAAM’s plan, Sustainability, emphasizes the need for a solid financial foundation to support its mission. The museum has actively pursued corporate partnerships with prominent organizations such as Nissan and HCA Healthcare. These collaborations have resulted in diversified funding streams, essential for long-term stability.
In addition to corporate partnerships, NMAAM is proactively exploring innovative programming models that offer engaging and premium donor experiences. This multi-faceted approach aims to ensure the organization can not only sustain its current initiatives but also invest in future community-centered projects.
National Impact: Expanding Cultural Authority
NMAAM’s final pillar, National Impact, aims to establish the museum as the preeminent voice on African American music in the country. This involves developing touring exhibitions and strengthening partnerships with major stakeholders in the music industry. One exciting initiative is the Jubilation! traveling exhibition, which celebrates the legacy of the Fisk Jubilee Singers. Its national premiere at Cincinnati’s Underground Railroad Freedom Center illustrates NMAAM’s expanding footprint and cultural relevance.
Through these efforts, the museum seeks to foster national conversations about the rich tapestry of Black musical heritage. Collaborating with influential figures in the music industry positions NMAAM to affect meaningful change and promote deeper appreciation for African American music.
Leadership Team Driving the Vision
The execution of this strategic plan will be guided by an experienced leadership team. William Jeffries III, the Executive Director, has leveraged his extensive background in cultural institutions to secure pivotal funding—amounting to $5 million from the Lilly Endowment. Alongside him, Tomicka Delgado serves as Deputy Director of Operations and Culture, focusing on providing exceptional guest services and enhancing organizational culture. Dexter D. Evans, as Deputy Director of Strategy and Advancement, plays a key role in guiding cultural programming and forging strategic partnerships.
Board Chair Stacey Koju has underscored the importance of this leadership team, emphasizing their expertise in cultural programming and operational excellence. This leadership stability is crucial as NMAAM undertakes its ambitious strategic initiatives while remaining committed to authentic storytelling.
Record Growth and Future Aspirations
NMAAM’s strategic direction coincides with unprecedented growth, drawing visitors from all 50 states and over 40 countries. The combination of enhanced programming, meaningful partnerships, and vibrant cultural storytelling has led to significant national recognition. The new three-pillar strategy not only aims for further expansion but also seeks to elevate NMAAM into the ranks of the top cultural destinations in the country.
The museum’s role as a steward of African American musical heritage is set to deepen, solidified by its designation as the Home of Black Music Month and ongoing partnerships with national recording artists. These initiatives affirm NMAAM’s growing influence and commitment to preserving and celebrating the contributions of African American musicians.
The future is bright for NMAAM. With its dedicated focus on education, sustainability, and national cultural impact, the museum is poised to amplify the legacy of African American music, ensuring it resonates for generations to come.
