Yolanda Pierson: New President and CEO of the Minnesota Black Chamber of Commerce
Yolanda Pierson, the owner of Pierson & Sons Trucking, has recently been appointed as the president and CEO of the Minnesota Black Chamber of Commerce (MBCC). With over 25 years of executive leadership experience, Pierson is poised to make a significant impact in enhancing opportunities for Black-owned businesses across Minnesota.
A Legacy of Leadership
Before stepping into her role at MBCC, Pierson has been a vital force in her family-owned business, helping steer its operations in Minneapolis. Her educational background, which includes a doctorate and a master’s degree in business administration, complements her practical experience, equipping her with the skills necessary to lead and innovate in her new position.
“It’s about building relationships,” Pierson says. “People forget that every step you take has been taken before. I’m just a bridge and connector here in the Twin Cities.”
This perspective highlights her commitment to fostering connections within the business community, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and shared experience.
The Mission of the Minnesota Black Chamber of Commerce
Founded in 2004, the MBCC plays a crucial role in empowering Black-owned businesses through education, advocacy, and economic development. The organization prides itself on offering resources such as networking opportunities, business accelerators, and micro-grants to create equitable growth pathways for entrepreneurs.
Pierson articulates a clear vision: “We are more than a membership organization. We’re a hub where Black business owners, community leaders, and partners can find trusted information. Right now, we’re focused on being a stabilizing force: listening, connecting, and sharing resources to help businesses navigate.”
Addressing Community Needs
The need for support within the community has become particularly pronounced in the wake of recent events in Minneapolis, including civil unrest and a tragic incident involving law enforcement. Pierson acknowledges the pain and uncertainty pervading the community and emphasizes the role of the Chamber in addressing these challenges.
“There is concern, grief, uncertainty, and fatigue across our communities,” she notes. “That’s where the chamber needs to act as stewards of our community, ensuring we show up when people need us.”
Community Initiatives
Pierson is not just focused on structural changes; she leads by example. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, she spearheaded a collaborative effort with fellow business owner Sheletta Brundidge of ShelettaMakesADifference.org to organize the Black Women’s Day of Service. This initiative delivered $13,000 in cash and 700 pieces of bedding to the Tubman Center East, a Minneapolis shelter for victims of domestic abuse, utilizing a dump truck from her trucking company.
“This was about meeting an immediate need in our community,” Pierson states, underscoring her commitment to service and active engagement.
Fostering Future Generations
Looking ahead, Pierson is keen to focus on mentorship and representation, especially for young aspiring entrepreneurs. She aims to create pathways for young people to see themselves in business ownership roles.
“You see it, you can be it,” she declares. “We want young people to look at the chamber and know that if someone like me did it, they can do it too.” This keen attention to youth empowerment illustrates her belief in the transformative power of representation in driving the next generation of business leaders.
An Invitation for Involvement
Pierson encourages both new and seasoned Black business owners to engage with the Chamber, stating, “We’re reimagining the Black Chamber. Whether you’re thinking of starting a business or have been a business owner for years, we’re going to be the hub for you.” Her open invitation signifies a welcoming atmosphere for collaboration and support, aiming to provide resources tailored to the diverse needs of the community.
