SOUTHOLD, NY — A local North Fork business owner with a heart of gold, known for his extensive community initiatives, was honored Friday for his innate kindness and generosity.

Charlie Manwaring, the owner of Southold Fish Market, was recognized by Eastern Long Island Hospital and the Eastern Long Island Hospital Foundation with a plaque celebrating his unwavering support for local healthcare. This honor reflects not just his philanthropic efforts, but also his commitment to improving the lives of residents across the North Fork.

In a formal recognition ceremony, Paul J. Connor, III, chief administrative officer of Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital, highlighted Manwaring’s contributions. “A dedicated community partner, Manwaring and Southold Fish Market have been steadfast supporters of SBELIH, helping to strengthen healthcare services across the North Fork through philanthropy and engagement,” he stated. The accolade was a testament to Manwaring’s leadership, generosity, and enduring commitment to the community.

The event saw attendance from various notable figures, including Linda Sweeney, vice-president of Foundation and external affairs, along with Foundation board members, hospital leadership, community representatives, friends, and supporters. The atmosphere was filled with admiration as attendees celebrated Manwaring’s dedication to community welfare.

Manwaring has long been synonymous with community support on the North Fork. His efforts extend beyond just providing quality seafood; he actively engages in numerous charitable initiatives. From organizing the annual Fall Fishing Showdown to hosting the beloved Lobster Bash, Manwaring demonstrates an unwavering commitment to giving back to those in need.

One of his recent initiatives is a festive contest where customers guess the number of Christmas lights adorning a tree at his market. The proceeds from this charming endeavor are directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, showcasing his desire to touch lives beyond the local community. Manwaring is a familiar face at Southold WinterFest and numerous other local events, embodying the spirit of kindness that has made him a beloved figure in the area.

During the ceremony, Connor emphasized the importance of recognizing community heroes. “We really do pay attention to that,” he remarked. He expressed his satisfaction in honoring Manwaring, acknowledging the significant role individuals like him play in supporting the local hospital and, consequently, the health of the entire community. The impact of the Lobster Bash was noteworthy, with Connor sharing that the event has raised an impressive $600,000 over its eight-year history.

Reflecting on the event’s success, Connor noted, “People may love to fish, but there are lots of party-goers who come because of what Charlie does.” His words resonated with the crowd, emphasizing a collective appreciation for the sense of community that events like the Lobster Bash create.

Manwaring’s humility shone through as he accepted the award. “I don’t do this for any recognition,” he stated, expressing a genuine desire to create smiles and joy for others. He acknowledged the essential role the hospital plays in the community, especially for local business owners like him. Many times my staff and I have needed care—from stitches to fish bones in our fingers—having the hospital close by has been invaluable,” he shared.

As Manwaring reminisced about past events, he acknowledged that the key to their success lies in the joy and laughter shared among participants. “At the end of the night, everybody is pretty happy,” he reflected, encapsulating the heartwarming spirit of the community gatherings he champions.

Sweeney praised Manwaring’s incredible commitment, noting that the Lobster Bash is “just spectacular” and underscoring the extraordinary worth of volunteers. “Volunteers aren’t paid—but they are priceless. Thanks to Charlie and his staff,” she shared, further highlighting the irreplaceable role local heroes play in enriching the lives of those around them.
