Catching a Glimpse of the Stars
The Journey of Susan Murabana
In the heart of Nairobi, where the city’s lights often overshadow celestial wonders, Susan Murabana’s childhood lacked encouragement for aspiring astronomers. The curriculum at her school was not focused on the vast mysteries of the solar system, leading to a feeling of missed opportunities. However, her perspective transformed in her early twenties when she beheld Saturn through a telescope for the first time, igniting a passion that would shape her future.
Founding The Travelling Telescope
In 2014, alongside her husband, Murabana took a monumental step; she invested in a telescope, feeling compelled to share her newfound love for astronomy with the younger generation. Thus, The Travelling Telescope was born—a vibrant initiative that travels across Kenya, providing children with direct access to astronomy education and a portable planetarium experience. Murabana’s mission was clear: to inspire wonder in young minds, allowing them to see and appreciate the universe that often goes unnoticed.
Impact on Young Lives
The allure of the telescope captured the imaginations of countless children, allowing them to explore the wonders of the moon, stars, and planets up close. Murabana recounts how the telescope becomes the centerpiece of excitement in every community they visit. Even global icons like Madonna have sought out the experience, reflecting the universal allure of the cosmos. The joy on children’s faces parallels the amazement she once felt—a reminder that the universe is constantly above, waiting to be discovered.
Making Refugees’ Lives Easier
The Burden of Laundry
In many parts of the world, particularly among the 70% of the population lacking access to electric washing machines, laundry becomes a colossal and time-consuming task. Women and girls disproportionately shoulder this burden; it’s not merely a chore but a demanding commitment that steals time away from education and personal advancement.
Navjot Sawhney’s Innovative Solution
In this context, London engineer Navjot Sawhney introduced an innovative solution: Divya, a portable, hand-cranked washing machine. This lightweight device, designed for off-grid use, facilitates not only washing but also drying clothes. Inspired by his former neighbor in South India, Sawhney founded the Washing Machine Project to tackle the challenges of cleaning clothes in resource-limited settings.
Distribution and Future Aspirations
Since its inception in 2018, over 150 Divyas have reached refugees in Iraq through collaborations with various non-profit organizations. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, proving that this simple appliance can reclaim precious hours for women and girls, empowering them to pursue education and independence. Sawhney has ambitious goals, seeking to deliver thousands of machines across multiple countries in the coming years, highlighting the urgent need for practical innovations in the face of growing global challenges.
Turning Old Tires into New Playgrounds
The Vision Behind Anthill Creations
In India, where urban landscapes often neglect the needs of children, a unique initiative has turned discarded tires into enchanting playgrounds. Founded by Pooja Rai, Anthill Creations aims to transform empty lots into vibrant, sustainable play spaces that foster creativity and joy among children. Inspired by the creative play of orphans with broken objects, Rai recognized the intrinsic value of play as a fundamental human right.
Sustainable Play Spaces
These playgrounds are not merely whimsical; they also represent a sustainable approach to waste management. Utilizing old tires—over 100 million of which are discarded in India annually—Anthill Creations creates safe, interactive environments for children, all while promoting environmental consciousness. Each playground, built in approximately five days for around $2,500, is designed to inspire endless imagination, offering diverse play opportunities.
Community Engagement and Future Goals
By working alongside governments and corporate partners, Rai envisions a future where every city is child-friendly. Thus far, Anthill has constructed around 300 playgrounds, each serving as a testament to the joy of play and the power of reimagining waste into something beautiful. As children discover new games within these spaces, they cultivate creativity and community bonds, proving that even from discarded materials, magic can emerge.
