Tragedy in Greater Noida: A Night of Chaos, Fog, and Delay

In the bustling Sector 150 of Greater Noida, a sharp 90-degree turn neatly skirts a plot filled with murky water. A 2-foot-high wall runs along the periphery of this dangerous expanse, acting merely as a thin, fragile barricade. Towering behind this unsettling pit rise high-rise buildings, their gates too high for average citizens to scale. During January in the National Capital Region, a thick layer of smog casts everything in dull greys, creating an atmosphere more ghostly than inviting.

The Fatal Turn

On January 16, what should have been a mundane drive home for Yuvraj Mehta transformed into a nightmare. As he returned from his workplace in Gurugram—approximately 60 kilometers away and merely meters from his apartment in Eureka Park—his car tragically veered off the road at that sharp turn, plunging into the water-filled pit below.

Yuvraj’s father, Rajkumar, later recounted how his son fought bravely for his life. “He had managed to open his car door and call me from his phone,” he shared with tear-filled eyes. “When I arrived, I didn’t know where to go, so I rang him again. He told me he had fallen into a ditch near our home.”

In the dense fog, Rajkumar struggled to find Yuvraj until he saw the flickering light of his son’s phone.

A Race Against Time

Tragically, help was slow to arrive. Yuvraj was fighting for his life for around two hours while emergency response teams stood idly by. Rajkumar’s heart sank as he realized the duration of the wait. “My son could have been saved had the rescue teams acted on time,” he remarked, his grief palpable.

When Yuvraj’s body was finally recovered from the muddy water, the post-mortem revealed he had suffered a cardiac arrest and drowned due to asphyxia. The family later performed his last rites in Haridwar, a revered location for Hindus, where the sacred river Ganga flows.

Public Alarm

Just a day after the funeral, Rajkumar shut his doors to the world. Outsiders were kept at bay as he coped with the unimaginable loss. Outside the gated community of Eureka Park, curious journalists lingered, but the family’s grief kept them from engaging. “Unki maansik stithi theek nahi hai” said a guard, translating to, “His mental state is not okay. He no longer wishes to meet anyone.”

Meanwhile, a passerby who had witnessed the incident recounted how he heard Yuvraj’s desperate cries for help that night. “I called the police at 12:14 a.m.,” he said, revealing that a police van arrived about six minutes later. An attempt to retrieve Yuvraj came too late: police officers, aware of the dangers of the murky waters, were cautious. “They sent a message to the fire brigade, which only arrived at 1:30 a.m.,” he further explained.

By this time, Yuvraj had climbed atop his car, his phone’s feeble light barely illuminating the dark surroundings. He called out for his father, his hopeful cries soon turning into desperate pleas: “I cannot hear you anymore. Water is getting into my ears.”

Community Grief and Anger

Residents described the scene at the site as chaotic and heartbreaking. Moninder Singh, an e-commerce delivery agent passing by, courageously volunteered to help. “Taking permission from the police, I tied a rope around myself and entered the water,” he recounted. However, despite his attempts to search, he found no signs of Yuvraj. “The police and firemen were hesitant,” he said.

As more people gathered, some documented the tragic scene, capturing videos that later spread like wildfire on social media. Images surfaced of a policeman cautiously wading into the water, his life jacket on, but not venturing far from the bank due to the risk.

At around 3:45 a.m., the State Disaster Response Force arrived, followed closely by the National Disaster Response Force at about 4:15 a.m. After a prolonged search, they finally retrieved Yuvraj’s body, igniting public outrage across social platforms.

Questions Arise

The aftermath of Yuvraj’s tragic drowning led to profound inquiries about rescue operations. A senior police official defended the delay, citing nearly zero visibility due to the heavy fog. As pressure mounted, Rajkumar lodged a complaint against the Noida Authority and the developers of the plot, citing negligence that led to his son’s death.

The FIR included serious charges of culpable homicide, negligence, and endangerment. However, anger and frustration continued to swell as citizens demanded accountability.

Online outrage resonated loudly with many sharing their own harrowing experiences of near-misses at the same location. “Just a few days ago, my scooter nearly fell into a similar ditch,” recalled a local, underscoring the community’s collective fear.
