Introduction to a Powerful Collaboration
In a landmark initiative, Microsoft UK has been identified as the inaugural industry partner for the UK government’s TechFirst program. Microsoft’s commitment includes offering 500 work placements and dedicating 5,000 hours of employee volunteering over the next four years, specifically aimed at enhancing artificial intelligence (AI) and technology skills among young talent.
A Step Forward for National Tech Skills Strategy
Announced by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), the partnership aligns with the government’s broader strategy to expand the UK’s digital and AI capabilities across educational and workforce pathways. TechFirst serves as the UK government’s flagship program, marking a significant investment in cultivating future tech professionals. It follows the success of the CyberFirst initiative, which has engaged over 415,000 young individuals keen on cyber security careers since its inception.
Reaching Out to Future Innovators
Under the TechFirst initiative, the government has set ambitious targets, aiming to connect with one million secondary school students across the UK. In addition, the program seeks to assist more than 4,000 graduates, researchers, and innovators in developing essential skills in advanced technologies. To achieve this, various pathways have been created: technology exploration programs for school students, scholarships and placements for university attendees, doctoral support for researchers, and funding designed to forge connections between businesses and local tech talent.
Microsoft’s Commitment to Mentorship and Opportunities
In this fruitful partnership, Microsoft will provide invaluable resources, including work placements and hours for employee volunteering focused on guiding students toward tech careers. Darren Hardman, CEO of Microsoft UK, emphasizes the critical need to democratize access to digital skills across the nation. He notes, “Talent is evenly distributed across the UK, but opportunity is not. In the new AI economy, access to digital skills will increasingly determine who gets access to opportunity.”

Supporting Diverse Stages of the Tech Talent Pipeline
The TechFirst program encompasses a wide array of initiatives, catering to different stages within the technology talent pipeline. For undergraduate students, the TechGrad scholarship program will invest in up to 900 scholars annually, along with an additional 100 for master’s students. This initiative provides essential funding, placements, and access to professional networks, crucial for launching successful careers.
In a significant move toward advancing education in artificial intelligence, the Spärck AI Scholarship will support postgraduate degrees at prestigious institutions such as the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, Imperial College London, and University College London. This scholarship ensures that promising students receive top-notch education and training in AI and related fields.
For doctoral students, the TechExpert initiative is set to back 500 PhD candidates exploring cutting-edge areas, including machine learning, quantum technologies, and cyber security. This investment signals a commitment to pushing the boundaries of research and innovation in technology.
Moreover, the program will amplify the existing Turing AI Fellowships, which aim to attract renowned AI researchers and bolster the UK’s reputation as a global hub for technological advancement.

In line with these developments, the ETIH Innovation Awards 2026 have been launched to celebrate advancements in education technology. These awards recognize organizations that have made measurable impacts across K–12, higher education, and lifelong learning sectors. Open for submissions from the UK, the Americas, and beyond, entries will be assessed on the strength of their evidence and real-world application.
