A Life-Changing Journey: Miss Funmilayo Akinsola’s Struggle for Recovery
In the quest for a brighter future, many individuals face unforeseen hurdles that can drastically alter their life’s trajectory. One such story is that of Miss Funmilayo Akinsola, a 34-year-old woman whose dreams for a promising career took a devastating turn after a horrific auto accident. On February 5, 2013, while traveling for a job interview in Abuja, a bus accident near Asejire, Ibadan, left her as the sole survivor among all passengers.
The Accident
Miss Akinsola recalls the terror of the incident, in which the bus she was traveling in flipped over and caught fire. The traumatic experience not only resulted in the loss of lives but also left her with critical injuries. As the only survivor, she was confronted with a series of life-altering physical challenges that would change her existence forever.
The Medical Journey Begins
After her rescue by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Miss Akinsola was rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan. There, she underwent numerous surgeries over several months to treat her extensive injuries, which included severe burns, tibio-fibular fractures, and pelvic dislocation. Unfortunately, her journey was riddled with complications, as her wounds became infected, leading to a grim prognosis from the medical team.
A Desperate Struggle for Survival
Despite the best efforts of doctors, Miss Akinsola realized that her situation was dire. The possibility of amputation was presented to her, but she firmly resisted this option in hopes of regaining her mobility. After enduring seven grueling months at UCH, she requested a referral to Lagos State Teaching Hospital, only to face further setbacks due to a doctors’ strike and a lack of available beds in the burns unit.
Seeking Help Abroad
With hope waning, her family eventually connected her with Ganga Medical Centre in Coimbatore, India, where she received critical care nearly a year post-accident. Unfortunately, the infection acquired during her initial treatment had caused significant damage, resulting in the need for painful surgeries, including the removal of part of her buttocks. As her family struggled to finance her treatment, they sought assistance from the former Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, who graciously helped cover her medical expenses while in India.
A Glimmer of Hope in the United States
After eight months of treatment in India, Miss Akinsola returned to Nigeria but soon received a referral to the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA. There, she met various surgeons who concluded that she required orthopedic surgeries to fix the rods that were temporarily implanted in her legs. Each procedure came at a substantial financial cost, and her family had already exhausted their resources to support her treatment.
An Ongoing Battle
Miss Akinsola’s plight did not end with her surgeries in the United States. With the temporary rods still inside her body, she faces the imminent threat of health complications such as rusting metal causing severe infections. She continues to appeal for financial assistance, as her parents had sold all their possessions in their desperate bid to fund her medical care but still require help to cover outstanding bills in the USA.
A Call for Help
Miss Akinsola is now reaching out to the public for support. She estimates that approximately N30 million is needed to cover the cost of her pending surgeries, which include two major orthopedic operations and one minor podiatric procedure. In her heartfelt plea, she implores well-meaning Nigerians, including Governor Seyi Makinde, to support her efforts to regain her health and complete her treatment.
Her bank account details have been made public for those willing to contribute: Akinsola Funmilayo Bisola, Zenith Bank, Account Number: 2001878808.
A Journey of Resilience
Her story is not just about a tragic accident; it is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming adversity. As she navigates this challenging journey, Miss Akinsola embodies hope and perseverance, urging everyone to consider the impact they can have on another’s life by helping her reclaim her future.
