In a remarkable archaeological find, researchers have uncovered a Roman hospital that later transformed into a Christian sanctuary in the ancient city of Kaunos, situated in southwestern Turkey’s Muğla Province. Research leader Ufuk Çörtük shared that this complex had been under investigation since 2022, with archaeologists focusing on a Late Antiquity section where they discovered medical instruments indicative of the hospital’s function. The Roman Hospital

Çörtük noted, “There was a structure on the upper terrace of the complex — we fully uncovered it this year, and a beautifully preserved church emerged.” This transition likely took place around the 6th century A.D., transforming the health facility into a religious hub.
Archaeological evidence supports the idea that the site remained in use during subsequent eras, including the Turkish period. A coin from the Aydinid Principality, which ruled between the 13th and 14th centuries, was also found, showcasing the site’s prolonged significance in different eras of cultural and political change.
