However, statistics show that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men are victims of domestic violence. Additionally, domestic violence manifests in various forms beyond physical abuse. Psychological, emotional, and economic abuse are equally damaging, yet often overlooked.

Economic Abuse: The Hidden Crisis Affecting 98% of Domestic Violence Victims

One of the lesser-known facets of domestic violence is economic abuse, where abusers manipulate financial resources to maintain control over their partners. This can include controlling access to income or preventing victims from securing employment. Fields notes that a staggering 98% of domestic violence victims experience some form of economic abuse.

This issue is multifaceted, contributing to societal costs estimated at $3 to $5 billion annually in healthcare expenses and lost productivity. Affected individuals frequently miss work—eight million people annually—and nearly half of survivors find themselves compelled to leave their jobs permanently.

To counter these challenges, URI has developed programs focused on financial empowerment, including financial coaching and credit repair. Their economic empowerment center collaborates with community partners and educational institutions, providing victims with invaluable resources while they work toward healing.

“Moving forward, we want to continue raising awareness around domestic violence,” Fields states. “We know it’s underreported. We want people to know that there are resources available to help.”
