Discovering the Heart of “Annie” at Manhattan Arts Center
Audiences are being transported back to the bustling streets of Great Depression-era New York City in the heartwarming musical “Annie.” This beloved story, which chronicles the rags-to-riches journey of an optimistic orphan, opened on Friday at the Manhattan Arts Center, promising to enchant viewers of all ages.
A Story of Extremes
Director Kim Riley encapsulated the essence of “Annie” by describing it as a narrative about extremes. The show presents a stark contrast between absolute despair and overwhelming hope. Riley pointed out, “You have these people in the extreme worst situations—never met parents, living hand-to-mouth, eating mush, and laboring as children within their surroundings.” However, the arrival of a wealthy benefactor changes everything, adding a twist of fate to the orphans’ grueling lives.
Life in the Orphanage
The musical kicks off in a dismal orphanage, where 11-year-old Annie, played by BrynnaMae Porter, along with the other girls, faces harsh treatment from the stern Miss Hannigan, portrayed by Jennifer Schermerhorn. But amid the neglect, Annie’s spirit shines bright. She carries a silver locket and a note from her parents, instilling in her a flicker of hope that they will return one day. “If you talk about Annie’s optimism, it’s extreme also,” Riley remarked, emphasizing the balance of despair and hope that defines the tale.
A Christmas with Warbucks
Annie’s fortunes take a turn when she gets a rare opportunity to spend Christmas with billionaire Oliver Warbucks, brought to life by Keoni Messer. What unfolds is a delightful transformation; Annie transitions from scrubbing floors in an orphanage to experiencing the opulence of Warbucks’s mansion, where luxury is a given and her deepest desires are within reach. Warbucks, initially dubious, starts to see beyond his wealth, experiencing joy he never thought possible as he grows into a father figure for Annie.
Talented Young Cast
The orphans in the musical form an exceptionally talented ensemble. “They sing well, they move well,” Riley asserted, showcasing the commitment and skill of the young performers. The production provides a platform for each child’s talent to shine, enhancing the show’s vibrant atmosphere. BrynnaMae Porter, taking on Annie for the first time, shared her excitement about the character: “I like my character because she’s really fun and excited easily. She’s been through a lot of rough things but she still smiles.”
A Journey of Discovery
Throughout the musical, Annie embarks on incredible adventures, including singing on the radio and even meeting President Franklin D. Roosevelt, played by Cody Hopkins. These experiences underscore her growth and the widening of her horizons as she seeks her birth parents with the help of Warbucks, who vows to offer a $50,000 reward and utilizes his connections with the FBI to assist her.
Multigenerational Participation
“Annie” is not only a tale of a young girl; it reflects the importance of family and community. The production features several multigenerational pairs who take the stage together, enriching the experience. Emily Trent and her daughter, Taylor Richards, both part of the ensemble, shared their joy in performing together. Trent noted, “It’s been really fun to get to do a show with my daughter,” highlighting the bonding experience that theater fosters among families.
For Amanda Kump and her daughter, Tessa Kump, “Annie” holds special nostalgia. Both contribute as versatile performers, taking on various minor roles. Amanda expressed, “‘Annie’ was the first Broadway show that my daughter and I saw together. It’s what opened the door to loving theater to me,” illustrating the deep connections forged through shared experiences in the arts.
Performance Schedule
“Annie” continues its run this weekend, captivating audiences again on Saturday and Sunday, and from December 12-14, with Friday and Saturday shows starting at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. This musical promises an emotional journey for all, filled with laughter, tears, and an abundance of hope amidst the trials of life.
