Insights from Dr. Velma Trayham: Closing the Wealth Gap and Empowering Women Entrepreneurs
Transforming the Landscape for Black Americans
Dr. Velma Trayham stands at the forefront of social change as the President and CEO of the Black Chamber of Arizona. With a mission to empower Black entrepreneurs and bridge the wealth gap, she manages one of the largest and most influential Black business chambers in the United States. Beyond her role at the Chamber, Dr. Trayham also founded HomeAccess America, a pioneering venture as the first Black-owned modular housing manufacturer in the nation. Her journey is marked by resilience, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to economic empowerment.
With accolades including a Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award and a best-selling author status, Dr. Trayham’s story is not just one of success—it’s a testament to breaking cycles. Growing up in poverty, having been born to a teenage mother, she has transformed her narrative into one of hope and progress, now advising corporations and government entities on effective strategies for economic improvement.
The Black Chamber of Arizona: Mission and Vision
The Black Chamber of Arizona is a 27-year-old advocacy organization that plays a pivotal role in supporting small businesses throughout 27 counties in the state. Unlike traditional chambers, it focuses on youth development, entrepreneurial impact, and workforce readiness. Dr. Trayham emphasizes that the Chamber’s unique programs aim to address the needs of justice-impacted individuals as well.
In her nearly two years of leadership, Dr. Trayham has shifted the Chamber’s operations to prioritize sustainability among small businesses—where 8 out of 10 fail within the first two years. She argues that businesses must be equipped with viable models that effectively solve real problems in their communities.
Barriers to Closing the Racial Wealth Gap
Reflecting on the systemic challenges in closing the racial wealth gap, Dr. Trayham identifies knowledge as a critical barrier. “It’s not something that’s taught in schools,” she explains. The solution lies in forming public-private partnerships that involve collaboration from corporations, banks, universities, and economic development agencies. Dr. Trayham’s ability to assemble these connections has been instrumental in advancing the causes of small businesses.
HomeAccess America: Innovating Housing Solutions
Dr. Trayham’s venture, HomeAccess America, addresses a pressing issue: the significant shortfall of homes in the United States. With a current deficit of 7 million homes, many individuals find themselves unable to afford housing near their workplaces. “If we’re not innovating, there’s no way we can achieve sustainable living and economic mobility,” she stresses.
HomeAccess America focuses on producing modular housing solutions designed for affordability and sustainability. The company holds an exclusive manufacturing agreement that allows it to provide high-quality, durable homes constructed from concrete and steel beams—far exceeding traditional construction in longevity. Dr. Trayham emphasizes that by addressing housing scarcity with innovative solutions, wealth can be more equitably distributed.
The Shift for Women in Entrepreneurship
Dr. Trayham takes the stage with successful entrepreneur Pinky Cole at The Shift event, scheduled for December 13. They will discuss the ongoing changes in entrepreneurship and the essential role women must play in this landscape. “Women need to understand their collective power and step up,” she insists.
The discussion will center on strategies for women to build multimillion-dollar enterprises while fostering executive presence and purpose-driven leadership. Dr. Trayham envisions the attendees leaving not only with knowledge but with actionable steps to elevate their business ventures.
Common Mistakes for Black Women Entrepreneurs
Reflecting on her experiences, Dr. Trayham highlights common pitfalls encountered by Black women starting their businesses. A key issue is the tendency to build a business around personal preferences rather than identifying and solving real market problems. Conducting thorough market research and developing a solid business model is essential.
Moreover, many entrepreneurs struggle with properly valuing their services and negotiating their worth. Dr. Trayham notes that building successful businesses often hinges on strategic partnerships. She underscores the importance of collaboration over isolation, advocating for unity within the entrepreneurial community.
Celebrating Accomplishments at the Pinnacle Pathways Gala
As the Black Chamber of Arizona prepares for its 27th anniversary with the Pinnacle Pathways Gala and Business Awards, attendance is expected to draw participants from various states. Dr. Trayham highlights the importance of recognizing small businesses for their contributions to job creation in the community.
With strong partnerships from entities like Arizona State University and Bank of America, the event aims to showcase the thriving diversity and rich culture of Arizona’s economy—challenging the common narrative about the state’s demographics. The gala serves as a platform to unify leaders and celebrate the strides made by Black entrepreneurs in the region.
