Empowering Dreams: The Journey of Veranda Rodgers and the Pregnant with Possibilities Resource Center
Veranda Rodgers is on a mission to reshape the narratives surrounding motherhood, particularly for Black mothers. Her own experience as a teenager becoming a mother at just 16 was transformative, serving as the catalyst for her journey toward personal growth and community impact.
Some Fuel for Change
Giving birth to her first child was a pivotal moment that ignited Rodgers’ desire to pursue education and empowerment. With undeterred support from her family, she returned to high school, graduated, and went on to earn a college degree, overcoming many challenges along the way.
Rodgers envisioned creating a space that would ease the burdens of motherhood, especially for young Black mothers grappling with systemic disadvantages. This vision culminated in the establishment of the Pregnant with Possibilities Resource Center in 2015.
A Name with Purpose
“The term pregnancy means something that you have inside of you that you need to give birth to,” Rodgers states. This philosophy underpins the center’s mission, highlighting the importance of nurturing not just babies, but also dreams and aspirations. Through its programs, Pregnant with Possibilities aims to empower mothers, particularly in underrepresented communities, to cultivate positive futures for themselves and their families.
Growing Community Support
The center, now located in Maple Heights, offers a 13-week educational program to support pregnant women and those up to 11 months postpartum. Each participant is paired with a care coordinator who checks in monthly, addressing essential needs like housing, food, and healthcare.
In addition, the center takes proactive measures against teen pregnancy by conducting sexual health education in local high schools. This effort aims to equip young people with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their sexual health.
Addressing Disparities
A significant focus of Pregnant with Possibilities is on the disparities affecting Black mothers and their infants. Data from the Cuyahoga County Board of Health reveals alarming statistics: from 2021 to 2023, Black infants were nearly three times more likely to die than their white counterparts in the area. The national trends indicate that Black women are also at a higher risk of pregnancy-related mortality.
Rodgers is determined to change the narrative. The center is part of a collaborative movement in Cuyahoga County aimed at reducing these disparities and providing culturally competent care to families in need. Other organizations have emerged alongside it, including Birthing Beautiful Communities and Village of Healing, further enriching the support network for Black mothers.
Personal Experiences Shaping a Mission
Rodgers’ personal motherhood journey informed the establishment of the center. She reflects on the contrasting experiences of parenting her first child as a teenager versus her second child a few years later when she was more prepared. Each phase brought different challenges, but also a deeper understanding of the support systems that need to exist for mothers like her.
Comprehensive Support Programs
At Pregnant with Possibilities, the support doesn’t stop at education. The center recognizes that mothers must have their basic needs met before they can focus on long-term growth. Transportation is provided via private Lyft rides, ensuring mothers don’t have to face inconveniences like public transport while managing infants.
Additionally, participants are offered nutritious meals to foster a sense of community and belonging during sessions. The curriculum spans a variety of topics—from baby preparation and financial literacy to self-care and stress management—ensuring that mothers leave equipped with vital life skills.
Measuring Success
The center utilizes pre- and post-assessments to track changes in behavior and knowledge among participants. This data-driven approach focuses on tangible outcomes such as improved understanding of safe sleep practices, financial management, and nutritional literacy.
Expanding Mental Health Services
Recognizing the increased mental health needs within the community, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, Pregnant with Possibilities has integrated mental health services into its offerings. With a significant portion of referrals for mental health during the past two years, the center has transitioned into a licensed behavioral health agency to ensure mothers have access to the support they require.
Addressing Trauma and Stress
Rodgers emphasizes the significance of mental health stability among her team, preparing them to serve the community without adding to their clients’ existing stress or trauma. The ethos of respect and dignity permeates through every interaction at the center, acknowledging the intense pressures faced by mothers in vulnerable positions.
Collaborating for Impact
Rodgers is clear: the work is not done in isolation. Collaboration among organizations is essential to create a comprehensive support system for families. The ongoing efforts reflect a growing commitment among policymakers and community leaders to improve conditions for mothers and infants, especially in the wake of increasing racial disparities highlighted during the pandemic.
Future Aspirations
Looking ahead, Rodgers envisions implementing transitional housing for mothers and their children, a critical step toward providing stable environments where families can thrive. This initiative would allow mothers to reside at the center for up to a year postpartum, providing continuous support as they transition back into the community.
A Call to Action
The conversation about maternal health and infant mortality is ongoing and complex. As Rodgers points out, significant gaps remain in transportation, housing, and proper access to health services. Advocating for holistic solutions is crucial if communities are to see lasting changes.
Rodgers remains motivated as she leads Pregnant with Possibilities, aiming to ensure that no mother feels alone in her journey while empowering them to dream bigger for themselves and their families.
