Positive Highlights from a Tumultuous 2024

If you’re struggling to remember positive news about 2024, you’re not alone. This year was marked by significant challenges on multiple fronts, from geopolitical tensions to environmental crises. Despite this, there were remarkable stories of resilience, hope, and humanitarian action that stood out, demonstrating the indomitable spirit of communities and individuals. Here are some inspiring highlights from 2024 that remind us of our capacity for kindness and change.

1. Cindy Ngamba: A Historic Achievement for Refugee Athletes

Cindy Ngamba made history this year by becoming the first medalist on the Refugee Olympic Team. Originally from Cameroon, Ngamba has a compelling story. After relocating to the UK 15 years ago, she has faced ongoing struggles for citizenship due to fears of persecution in her home country. Despite these challenges, she excelled in boxing, representing the Refugee Olympic Team and securing a medal that symbolizes hope for many refugees worldwide.

2. AI for Good: Innovations for Humanity

Throughout 2024, Artificial Intelligence emerged as a game-changer in various sectors, particularly in humanitarian efforts. The “AI for Good” conference brought together tech giants like Google and OpenAI with organizations such as the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to explore practical applications of AI that can aid those in need. One remarkable example is Aprendia, an AI-driven chatbot designed to reach millions of children deprived of education due to conflict and other crises.

3. Vaccination Milestones: Protecting Vulnerable Children

In February, we celebrated a significant achievement: the administration of one million vaccine doses to “zero-dose” children in Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, and South Sudan. This success was made possible through the Zero-Dose Immunization Program (ZIP), which seeks to identify and vaccinate children in fragile communities lacking reliable health services. “Children living in hard-to-reach communities now have a fighting chance for a better future,” noted Thabani Maphosa, managing director of country programs delivery at Gavi.

4. Samia’s Recognition: Spotlight on Mental Health

In 2024, IRC psychologist Samia was honored by the BBC as one of the most inspiring and influential women worldwide. Her tireless work providing psychological support to displaced communities in northeast Syria highlights the essential role of mental health services in crisis recovery. Driven by personal experience and a strong belief in the importance of mental well-being, Samia’s contributions continue to illuminate the path toward healing for many.

5. Family Reunification: A Ramadan Reunion

For the Hussaini family, 2024 was a landmark year as they celebrated their first Ramadan together after enduring a painful separation during their escape from Afghanistan in 2021. Now reunited in Salt Lake City, they embraced the joy of togetherness, sharing traditions and preparing iftar meals to break their fasts. “When our daughters were apart from us we were counting the days… Now they are here, we’ve just lost track of time,” shared mother Sanowbar, reflecting the profound relief of family reunification.

6. Mon Rovia’s Musical Resilience

In October, Afro Appalachian folk artist Mon Rovia released his new single, “Winter Wash 24,” a poignant reflection on his journey as a refugee. Through music, he addresses feelings of helplessness while urging listeners to engage with and care for those affected by global events. Proceeds from the song will support IRC’s humanitarian efforts, showcasing how art can serve as a vehicle for activism and awareness.
