Among them is Amina Hatia, a passionate midwife who utilizes her nurturing instincts to foster the growth of new parents across the NHS and charity sectors. Amina’s initial career aspirations took a different path. In her twenties, she was on the verge of becoming a broadcast journalist with the BBC. However, her life took a personal turn when she became a mother for the first time. With the birth of her daughter, Saraa, Amina experienced a pregnancy and delivery that she felt were largely dictated by external expectations. “I did what was expected of me,” she reflects. “It was OK, but I didn’t really know much about the world, or about myself, and I wasn’t really listened to.” This early experience laid the groundwork for her later passion for advocating for expectant mothers, particularly those in challenging circumstances.
The defining moment in Amina’s journey came with the birth of her second daughter, Amber. This time, she was accompanied by an exceptional midwife who made her feel safe and empowered. “I was able to do it without needing pain relief, which was incredibly empowering. I felt like I could climb Mount Everest!” she recalls with enthusiasm. The positive birth experience not only shaped her outlook but also ignited her desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. “I saw how having a positive birth experience can be absolutely lifechanging,” Amina says, revealing her epiphany: “This is what I want to do with my life.” It wasn’t long before she found herself in midwifery training, ready to embrace this new calling.
Amina’s work is particularly focused on supporting disadvantaged parents and those who may struggle due to language barriers. Her empathy and understanding extend beyond professional obligations; they stem from her personal journey and the insights gleaned from her experiences as a mother. She advocates for the importance of listening to parents and facilitating a space where they feel empowered and informed during one of life’s most pivotal moments. This dedication is so influential that Amina has even inspired her daughter to consider the same path, illustrating the ripple effect of her impact.
