Accra Hosts the Africa Real Estate Festival 2026
Accra has officially been chosen as the host city for the groundbreaking Africa Real Estate Festival (AREF) 2026, a new continental platform aimed at reshaping the real estate and urban development landscape across Africa. The launch event took place on January 16, 2026, and served as a gathering point for government officials, diplomats, developers, investors, and industry professionals. This diverse assembly shared a unified vision: to transition Africa’s real estate sector from traditional transactions to a focus on long-term, people-centered development.
The Vision of AREF
In his address at the launch, Desmond Oteng, Founder and CEO of AREF, emphasized that this festival is more than just an event; it’s a movement catalyzed by Africa’s rapid urbanization. “By 2050, over 1.4 billion Africans will be living in cities. Yet our discussions on real estate remain fixated on buildings and prices rather than people, quality of life, and sustainability,” he pointed out.
Mr. Oteng explained that AREF aims to reposition real estate as a driver of economic transformation, climate responsibility, and cultural identity. The inaugural festival, scheduled for April 18 and 19, 2026, will draw participants ranging from policymakers and architects to financial institutions and diaspora stakeholders, aiming to create a holistic approach to urban growth.
A Continental Endeavor
While Ghana is the festival’s host, Oteng emphasized AREF’s continental reach, with plans to expand into other African countries. “We are focused on intentional city building. What Africa needs is not more unplanned cities or gated communities, but connected environments that function well for their inhabitants,” he emphasized.
International interest in AREF was illustrated by the participation of diplomats like Her Excellency Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland, High Commissioner of Barbados to Ghana. She characterized AREF as a practical bridge linking diplomacy, investment, and sustainable development, highlighting that real estate now encompasses a broader ecosystem concerning capital flows and long-term value.
Learning from Barbados
High Commissioner Bynoe-Sutherland provided insights from Barbados, where real estate accounts for nearly 18% of the national GDP. She attributed this success to political stability, well-structured legal frameworks, and progressive tax policies. She argued that the Barbadian experience can offer valuable lessons for Ghana and other African nations, particularly regarding tourism-linked real estate and sustainable community planning. She also noted a rising interest among Caribbean investors in Ghana, following increased travel between the regions.
Government Strategies for Diaspora Engagement
From the government’s perspective, Mr. Agyemang from the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President elaborated on Ghana’s evolving strategy to deepen diaspora investment in the real estate sector. He indicated a shift from informal remittances to structured investments focused on asset creation. “Our goal is to leverage remittances for asset building,” he stated.
He identified three priority areas to facilitate this shift: integrating capital markets through real estate investment trusts, improving regulatory transparency with digital land governance, and establishing sustainability initiatives within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Strengthening the Real Estate Ecosystem
Mr. Agyemang commended the AREF initiative for its swift execution, reaffirming the government’s openness to partnerships aimed at strengthening Ghana’s real estate landscape. The festival’s organizers communicated that AREF is poised to influence policy dialogues, attract credible global investments, and promote responsible development while elevating African design excellence.
As Africa faces unprecedented urban growth, AREF 2026 is positioned as a timely platform that aims to ensure that the cities constructed today foster dignity, opportunity, and shared prosperity for future generations. AREF serves as a pan-African initiative committed to empowering the entire real estate ecosystem through various events, research, and innovative programs.
In this context, it connects all stakeholders across the value chain to drive sustainable growth and culturally rooted development within Africa’s built environment.
