Celebrating Black History Month in Houston: A Look at Notable Events for 2026

Every February, the nation honors the rich history and contributions of African Americans through various cultural events, educational activities, and community gatherings. In 2026, the celebration takes on special significance as it marks 100 years since the inception of Black History Month, which began as “Negro History Week” in 1926. This original week was strategically chosen to coincide with the birthdays of pivotal figures in American history—Abraham Lincoln on February 12 and Frederick Douglass on February 14—both revered within Black communities.
