A Journey of Resilience: Dr. Luke Wood and His Commitment to Student Success
Dr. Luke Wood’s path to leadership at California State University, Sacramento (Sac State) is a remarkable tale of resilience and determination. Born in a prison and raised in the foster care system, Dr. Wood faced significant challenges from a young age. His experiences growing up in a small Northern California town with limited diversity profoundly shaped his perspective on education and equity. “Definitely had good experiences, but also had some real challenging experiences growing up in a very non-diverse environment,” he shared in an interview with AFROTECH

The Early Struggles
Dr. Wood’s formative years were marked by systemic challenges in education, particularly as a Black male in foster care. In the fifth grade, he faced a staggering number of suspensions, 42 times compared to his twin brother’s 24. He described these punitive measures as disillusioning, pushing him away from academia. These early experiences sparked a fire in him, leading to a desire for change within the educational system.
The Turning Point
A significant shift occurred thanks to an inspiring educator named Mr. Guggenheimer. Recognizing Dr. Wood’s talent for writing, Mr. Guggenheimer mentored him, fostering a love for storytelling. This support not only rekindled Dr. Wood’s interest in school but also laid the foundation for his belief in the power of relationships and high expectations in education. “If you have an environment where educators have high expectations and truly care, it’s amazing what can be done,” he reflected.
Leading Sac State
Today, Dr. Wood is the 9th President of CSU Sacramento, a role he had envisioned for himself since his college days. Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in history and political science, followed by a master’s in higher education leadership, he always knew he would one day occupy this important position. With youthful enthusiasm, he would introduce himself as “Hi, I’m Luke, and I’m gonna be the president of Sac State.” This confidence was rooted in the sobering awareness he gained during his college orientation, where he learned that only one in three students was likely to graduate.
Advocacy for Black Students
Dr. Wood’s commitment to student success extends beyond personal ambition; it is deeply intertwined with activism. As a student, he advocated for the retention and support of Black students and the increase of Black faculty on campus. He brought those goals into his presidency by introducing symbolic reminders, like carrying his printed demands in the pocket of his coat when he applied for the role.
Establishing the Black Honors College
One of Dr. Wood’s most significant early actions as president was the creation of the Black Honors College, which opened in 2024. This initiative represents a culmination of his commitment to supporting Black students and enhancing their educational opportunities. “The Black Honors College was an intentional effort to finish what we started,” he explained.
A Unique Educational Experience
The Black Honors College is the first of its kind in the nation and was designed specifically for Black students. It offers a robust curriculum, specialized coursework, internships, mentorships, and scholarships. Students interested in Black history and culture are encouraged to apply early in their academic careers. Admission eligibility requires a minimum GPA of 3.5, which reflects the college’s commitment to academic excellence.
Student Experiences
Students like Savannah Beattie, enrolled in the Black Honors College, have expressed the program’s positive impact on their academic journey and sense of community. Savannah highlighted the unique opportunities for learning and collaboration, stating, “It’s almost created a mini HBCU here at Sac State.” She appreciated the supportive environment and the passionate peers she has encountered, reinforcing the significance of diversity in education.
Curriculum and Minors
The curriculum in the Black Honors College is intentionally crafted to address the needs of Black students while promoting upward socioeconomic mobility. Students can choose from various minors, including leadership, leadership in aging and health, and leadership in land and real estate development. A notable addition is an AI management minor offered within the College of Business, which prepares students to leverage artificial intelligence across various sectors.
Robust Enrollment Growth
The establishment of the Black Honors College has had a profound effect on student enrollment, particularly among Black students. Dr. Wood reported that enrollment has “skyrocketed” over the last two years, with the initial cohort of 80 students expanding to more than 500. He envisions reaching 1,000 students by spring 2027, aiming to further enhance the college’s role as a beacon of support and success.
Champions of Diversity
Dr. Wood underscores the importance of building alliances in the fight for diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education. He emphasizes that the work done by the Black Honors College is not limited to serving Black students; it’s open to allies of all backgrounds who believe in equal opportunities. “We can show that what we’re doing is certainly intentional about Black students, but it’s open to allies, and we need allies if we’re gonna be successful in what’s to come,” he stated.
In a landscape often marked by performative gestures towards equity, Dr. Wood’s approach is rooted in actionable change. His leadership exemplifies a commitment to fostering an inclusive educational environment where all students can thrive.
