The Black Family’s Expanding Hospitality Vision in San Antonio
The Black family, known for their acclaimed Texas barbecue chain, Terry Black’s Barbecue, is turning heads with exciting new developments in San Antonio. Renowned for their Michelin-recommended culinary offerings that have delighted locals and visitors alike, the family is now set to elevate the hospitality landscape with a unique blend of relaxation and dining.
New Developments Near Pearl
At the heart of this evolution is their project located at 2101 Broadway near the vibrant Pearl District. Here, Black Family Hospitality plans to introduce an underground bathhouse and spa, paired with a hotel and an additional barbecue venue. The ambitious project aims to merge culinary delights with wellness experiences, crafting a diverse environment intended to cater to a variety of guests.
An Overview of the Bathhouse
Spanning an impressive 9,800 square feet, the bathhouse is designed with relaxation in mind, featuring an array of amenities. Patrons can expect to find hot and cold spas, cold plunges, a large linear spa, and even a salt float area. Additional facilities—such as a steam room, cold mist room, massage rooms, and a spacious locker room—will ensure that visitors can unwind and rejuvenate in style. With a hefty $8.4 million investment, the construction is projected to wrap up by June 2028.
Inspired by Global Experiences
Mark Black, who spearheads the family business alongside his siblings Christina and Michael, shared insights into their vision. “We’ve been traveling all over, and we’ve come to really enjoy the bathhouse experience in Europe and Iceland,” he noted. The intent is to create a self-guided spa experience that is both appealing and accessible, allowing guests to indulge in a personal journey of relaxation.
Dining and Hospitality
In addition to the new bathhouse, the Black family has plans for a restaurant, complete with a dining courtyard and a pit house. This establishment will be located right in front of the Alamo Colleges District’s headquarters, further embedding the restaurant in the local community. The family is also in the process of developing a hotel that will feature two additional dining venues, distinct from their existing barbecue operations.
A Broader Hospitality Focus
The transformation of their entrepreneurial vision is evident. After achieving success with their barbecue restaurants in Dallas, Fort Worth, and Waco, as well as upcoming locations in New Braunfels and Houston, the Black family is eager to diversify their hospitality portfolio. “We want to do hospitality projects and projects as a whole for places where we want to visit and enjoy,” Mark stated. Their goal is to create a community hub, effectively becoming the “living room” of the neighborhood where locals can gather and forge connections.

With plans on the horizon for a blend of entertainment options, including a classic bowling alley, sushi and cocktail bar, and taco spot in their hometown of Lockhart, the Black family is excited about their future projects.
