Empowering Change: Davenport University’s African American Student Retention Initiative

The journey to college is often fraught with obstacles, particularly for students of color. Many face unique challenges that can hinder their academic progress and ultimately affect their chances of earning a degree. In light of this, Davenport University has launched the African American Student Retention Initiative (AASRI), a compassionate program designed to ensure that more Black students thrive and succeed.

Understanding the Challenges

Yvette McCutchen, a faculty member at Davenport’s College of Business and College of Urban Education, recognizes the nuanced difficulties that African American students encounter on their educational journey. Her deep understanding of these challenges informs her dual role as both an instructor and a leader of the AASRI.

The impetus for the AASRI came when university data revealed that students of color were not completing their degrees at the same rates as their peers. Economic and cultural hurdles were identified as critical factors contributing to these disparities, prompting a collaborative effort among McCutchen, Gilda Gely, Davenport’s provost, and other stakeholders. This initiative culminated in the launch of the Black Retention Program in 2024, aimed at mitigating these challenges.

Goals of the Initiative

At its core, the AASRI aims to level the playing field for Black students, helping them pursue their educational aspirations and finish their degrees. McCutchen articulates the initiative’s central mission: “We want our African American students to retain and graduate at the same level as their peers who are not the first in their families to attend college.” This goal highlights not only ambition but also a commitment to equality in higher education.

Comprehensive Support Services

The AASRI operates through four distinct yet interrelated strategies. The first is the provision of tailored support services that address the academic, emotional, financial, co-curricular, and extra-curricular needs of African American students.

Davenport recognizes that these students often face unique pressures. By crafting support services specifically designed for them, the initiative aims to create a nurturing environment where students can flourish. Additionally, it emphasizes a shift in mindset among faculty and staff, urging them to become proactive change agents advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Training and Cultural Sensitivity

A crucial aspect of the initiative is the ongoing education provided to faculty and staff. McCutchen emphasizes the importance of cultural sensitivity training, ensuring that all individuals involved at Davenport have a strong grasp of the diverse backgrounds and needs of their students. A simple question like, “What else can I do to assist you?” can lay the foundation for a supportive educational environment.

Another vital focus of the AASRI is identifying funding opportunities aimed at supporting first-generation students of color. This includes direct scholarships and sponsoring vital support services such as tutoring sessions and study tables for athletes. The financial landscape can be a significant barrier to completing education, especially for those who may already be facing economic challenges.

Communication and Engagement

Effective communication is pivotal in creating a sense of belonging among first-generation students and their families. The AASRI has established an accessible communication system to keep students and parents informed about available services such as financial aid, mental health resources, and peer mentoring. This clearer understanding fosters a greater sense of community and support, which is essential for student retention.

The Power of Peer Mentoring

One of the standout features of the AASRI is its emphasis on peer mentoring. Research has consistently shown that mentorship can play an indispensable role in academic success. McCutchen points out that pairing students with faculty and peer mentors offers guidance, encouragement, and crucial support.

She recalls her own early experiences mentoring students of color and is enthusiastic about extending this effort through the AASRI. Building strong relationships between mentors and mentees from the outset can foster a culture of care and accountability.

Future Aspirations

The vision for the AASRI extends beyond immediate support. McCutchen envisions future partnerships with major corporations that could provide internship and scholarship opportunities for participants. These connections will not only enhance the education experience but also open doors to professional networks and career paths.

Revitalizing Community and Culture

A noteworthy early success of the AASRI was the revival of Davenport’s Black Student Union (BSU) in 2025. This initiative operates in tandem with AASRI, serving to enrich the college experience for Black students. While AASRI focuses on retention, BSU amplifies cultural awareness and community engagement.

The BSU is dedicated to fostering leadership and mentorship opportunities while providing platforms for dialogue and cultural celebration. Through community service projects and dynamic speaker series featuring influential Black figures, it creates an enriched campus environment that supports both academic and personal growth.

A Movement for Change

Together, the AASRI and BSU represent a transformative approach to improving the college experience for Black students at Davenport University. As McCutchen eloquently puts it, “This isn’t just a program; it’s a movement to ensure every Black student has the resources, connections, and support system not just to survive but absolutely thrive.”

Through these comprehensive initiatives, Davenport University is not just addressing retention rates; it is fostering a vibrant and inclusive community where every student can achieve their highest potential. The AASRI stands as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that through collaborative effort and targeted support, lasting change is both possible and necessary.
