On January 5, 1975, the spotlight illuminated the Majestic Theatre on Broadway as it welcomed an all-Black cast in a unique retelling of a classic tale—The Wiz. This dazzling production quickly captured hearts worldwide, intertwining Dorothy’s journey with the rich tapestry of Black culture and artistry.

Now, The Wiz is set to enchant audiences once again, this time with a new generation of talent that reflects modern sensibilities. Innovating on its storied legacy, the production features fresh choreography by JaQuel Knight, famed for his work on Beyoncé’s iconic “Single Ladies.” The creative ensemble combines seasoned legends with the pulse of contemporary Black artists, making this revival not only a tribute but also an evolution.

Excitement Builds for the National Theatre

As the North American tour gears up for its limited run at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C., from April 7 to 14, cast member Cal Mitchell, who brings The Lion to life, can hardly contain his excitement. This role signifies a major milestone in Mitchell’s journey, marking his ascent from understudy to a lead character in one of the most celebrated musicals in history.

“Being cast as The Lion means everything to me,” he expresses. “It’s an honor to be part of a legacy that includes remarkable talents like Ted Ross, who was the original Lion.” Ross not only won a Tony Award for his Broadway performance but also starred in the film adaptation alongside Diana Ross and Michael Jackson—a cinematic endeavor met with mixed reviews yet cherished by many families across generations.

A Groundbreaking Production with Historical Impact

The Wiz made history in 1975, earning seven Tony Awards from eight nominations, including accolades for Best Musical and Best Direction. It opened doors for numerous African-American performers, amplifying voices that had previously been sidelined in mainstream theatre. This pivotal production featured artists like Andre De Shields and Mabel King, whose legacies continue to inspire.

Despite the challenges associated with pursuing a career in the arts, Mitchell underscores the importance of resilience and passion. “My journey has been filled with hard work—from internships to regional productions,” he notes. “It’s about more than the glitz—true joy comes from connecting with audiences.”

The Significance of Black Joy

What makes The Wiz resonate so deeply within the cultural landscape? Cal Mitchell believes it comes down to Black joy, an enduring source of strength and community. “Regardless of social or political climates, our joy is something that remains untouchable,” he explains. “The musical presents an interpretation of a classic story that’s particularly resonant for Black audiences, showcasing our rich heritage and artistry.”

A New Face of Dorothy

While Cal Mitchell shares the spotlight as The Lion, the role of Dorothy has transitioned to Phoenix Assata LaFreniere. Although unable to comment directly for this article, Mitchell emphasizes LaFreniere’s talent and adaptability. “Her ability to rise to this occasion at such a young age is inspiring,” he remarks. “She embodies the spirit of Dorothy, bringing a mesmerizing voice that will resonate with audiences.”

Generational Connections

In an era where many may be unfamiliar with this classic tale, Mitchell hopes the upcoming performances will captivate hearts young and old alike. “There’s a whole generation that hasn’t experienced The Wiz, whether on stage or screen,” he admits. “I’m confident they’ll discover not just a story but a connection to themselves, echoing the timeless message of ‘there’s no place like home.’”

Amidst challenges and uncertainties, The Wiz continues to thrive as a vital piece of theatre, forging connections through joy, resilience, and artistry. With its journey back to the stage, it reinvigorates discussions about cultural representation and empowerment, ensuring its place in the hearts of many for generations to come.
