Celebrate Culture at UC Davis: A Series of Vibrant One-Day Events

From Friday, April 3, to Saturday, May 23, UC Davis invites the public to immerse themselves in a rich tapestry of cultural celebrations through six engaging one-day events. Organized by students and staff at the university’s Cross Cultural Center, these events stand as a testament to diversity, community engagement, and the celebration of heritage. The Big Time — Friday, April 3

Kick off the celebration with The Big Time, a momentous occasion highlighting California Native communities and traditions. This inaugural event promises an evening filled with shake-head dancing, presentations by Native vendors, and community resource booths, offering participants a unique glimpse into the traditions and resilience of these communities. Free to attend, this vibrant event runs from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the University Credit Union Center. Powwow — Saturday, April 4

Continuing the celebrations, the 50th Annual Powwow takes place on April 4, celebrating Native student leadership and cultural continuity. As one of the longest-running student-organized powwows in California, this event features dance competitions, intertribal dancing, drum groups, and gourd dancers, alongside native craft and food vendors. The Powwow serves as a gathering space for Native families, students, alumni, and the general public, embodying a vibrant sense of community. Danzantes del Alma — Saturday, April 25

On April 25, prepare for an artistic showcase with Danzantes del Alma, a beloved student folklorico dance troupe established in 1977. The troupe’s 47th Annual Show, titled “Historias de mis Raíces” (Spanish for “Stories of My Roots”), beautifully intertwines traditional dances from Mexico with contemporary interpretations of the Chicanx/Latinx experience. Tickets are priced at $16.50 for children, $18 for UC Davis students, and $28.50 for others, available through the Mondavi Center’s Events & Tickets website.
