Jeffrey Daniel Calls for Diaspora Return to Africa

From Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye, Abuja

Legendary American–African music icon Jeffrey Daniel, a founding member of the iconic soul-funk group Shalamar, has issued an evocative call for Africans living in the diaspora to return to their roots. His message resonates with a growing sentiment that emphasizes reconnection to the motherland, a journey he himself has undertaken.

A Significant Visit

Daniel, now 70, is celebrated not only for his musical prowess—known for hits like “A Night to Remember” and “The Second Time Around”—but also as a pioneer in street dance and R&B music. His recent visit to the headquarters of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) in Abuja was marked by warm receptions and profound reflections. During this visit, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Chairman/CEO, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, while sharing his decision to reside permanently in Nigeria.

A Journey of Joy and Healing

During the fifth Badagry Door of Return Festival, an event designed to celebrate African heritage and memory, Daniel found a refreshing sense of connection. He described his experience as one of “joy, healing, and reconnection.” Walking through the Door of Return, he felt a striking contrast to the nearby Point of No Return, a harrowing symbol of the forced departure of enslaved Africans. This emotional juxtaposition allowed him to reflect on his ancestry and reaffirm his purpose.

Celebrating Diaspora Achievements

Daniel took time to commend the remarkable achievements of Nigerians abroad, spotlighting their significant contributions in fields like technology, sports, and the arts. He noted that approximately 60% of Nigerians in the diaspora are celebrated as top-performing students, underscoring the intellectual strength and resilience inherent in Nigerian culture. His main call to action was clear: “return home and contribute to rebuilding Africa.” He emphasized the need to revive the spirit of the ancestors and reconnect particularly with Nigeria.

Embracing Nigerian Culture

In his discourse, Daniel celebrated Nigeria’s diverse and vibrant culture, describing it as “alive and intact.” He highlighted the rich tapestry of languages, traditions, and cuisines that characterize the nation. Acknowledging the challenges faced, such as limited infrastructure, Daniel praised the resilience and creativity displayed by Nigerians. Using a vivid analogy, he stated, “Nigeria should never be abandoned regardless of its challenges… [It is] a luxury car, which if it has any dents, should be fixed and appreciated, not discarded because of a dent.”

The Legacy of Dance

Beyond his musical contributions, Daniel is remembered as a judge on Nigerian Idol and for teaching the iconic moonwalk, a dance move famously associated with Michael Jackson. He continues to remain active in the entertainment scene, performing with a reformed lineup of Shalamar as recently as 2025 and 2026.

A Symbolic Homecoming

Dabiri-Erewa hailed Daniel’s return as both “symbolic and a homecoming.” She recognized this moment as a historic occasion, noting that he is the first global celebrity of his stature to not only visit but also remain in Nigeria. His presence signifies NiDCOM’s ongoing efforts to encourage the diaspora to reconnect, reinvest, and contribute to national development.

A Message of Hope and Renewal

Dabiri-Erewa echoed the sentiments that Daniel’s journey surpasses mere celebrity status; it reflects a deeper narrative of identity, heritage, and the importance of cultural reconnection. His decision to embrace his roots sends a powerful message to Africans in the diaspora: Nigeria is a place of belonging and opportunity, despite its challenges.

Engaging with Cultural Heritage

Describing his participation in the Badagry festival, Dabiri-Erewa noted that Daniel’s walk through the Door of Return was “emotional, symbolic, and unifying.” Such experiences reinforce NiDCOM’s commitment to utilizing culture and creativity in fostering national development and rebranding Nigeria on a global scale.
