For Alexis Ojo, the owner of Dark Shugar, this month holds particular significance. “I love that we celebrate Black History Month. We celebrate our hair, the culture. I love that we can express our identity through different hairstyles,” she expresses with enthusiasm.

The Birth of Dark Shugar

Alexis Ojo founded Dark Shugar in response to a pressing need she observed upon moving to Canada. The market for hair extensions and the understanding of Afro hair were alarmingly absent. “When I came to Canada, I noticed there was a scarcity of hair extensions and knowledge of Afro hair. I’d see friends struggling with their hair choices, often opting for cuts or styles that didn’t suit them. I thought, ‘Let me see what I can do.’” Ojo embarked on a mission to fill this void and empower the Black community in Canada through hair.

Learning and Growing

Her journey began with simple online tutorials. “I started watching videos online, learning step by step about hair care and styling. Friends would come to my room for their hair, and soon word spread—more people came seeking my services. It became a movement, and God has blessed the business tremendously. I now have a whole team dedicated to helping others,” Ojo recounts, speaking about the grassroots nature of her enterprise.

A Name with Meaning

Naming her business was an emotional decision for Ojo, tying back to her childhood in Nigeria. “In secondary school, my friends used to call me Dark Shugar because I have dark skin, and it was a term of endearment,” Ojo reminisces. When it came time to name her business in a new country, the choice felt nostalgic. “At first, my mom wasn’t a fan. She thought, ‘What is Dark Shugar? That sounds like a street name.’ But over time, when people asked what ‘DS’ meant, I proudly told them it stood for Dark Shugar, and that name began to resonate.”

Ojo credits her success to her faith, ensuring every business decision is grounded in her spirituality. “I put God at the center of everything,” she explains. “Even the music we play in the store, it doesn’t have to be religious—just calm and positive tunes that create a welcoming environment.” This philosophical approach enhances the customer experience while fostering an inviting and reflective atmosphere.

Beyond managing her business, Ojo places tremendous value on mentorship. “I focus on empowering my stylists, not just seeing them as employees, but as individuals to invest in,” she says passionately.
