Baltimore is transforming into a vibrant oasis for Black women seeking leisure and adventure. Amid the hustle and bustle of city life, Mayor Brandon Scott is on a mission to invite Black women to embrace Charm City as their own destination for relaxation, celebration, and connection.
Celebrating Black Culture
The city of Baltimore has a rich tapestry of Black culture that manifests in its festivals, events, and a budding community of Black-owned businesses. The commitment to celebrating this culture is palpable, with events like the CIAA championship game attracting thousands of Black women, who show up not only as fans but as a vital force in the community.
Mayor Scott emphasizes that Baltimore is a welcoming space for Black women to enjoy the best the city has to offer—like indulging in local delicacies such as crab cakes and oysters, while surrounded by their community. “What better place to rest and get some good crab cakes, enjoy some stuff, and be amongst your people than in Baltimore?” Scott invites, highlighting the city’s deep appreciation for Black culture.
A Surge in Domestic Black Travel
Recent findings from MMGY Travel Intelligence reveal an inspiring trend: Black travelers contribute significantly to the economy, with a notable $145 billion spent annually on domestic travel. This is an increase from previous years, indicating a growing trend among Black women to seek travel experiences that not only uplift them but also resonate with their cultural values. Whether it’s enjoying luxurious stays or participating in vibrant festivals, Black women are increasingly carving out spaces for themselves in the travel industry.
Festivals and Celebrations
Baltimore’s cultural landscape is dotted with events designed to uplift and celebrate Black womanhood. One such event is the AFRAM Festival, slated to take place from June 19-21. This festival, featuring a diverse lineup of performers from various generations, exemplifies the vibrant community spirit of the city. With iconic names like Charlie Wilson and Chloe Bailey performing, the festival invites women to gather, celebrate, and enjoy free access to what is sure to be an unforgettable experience. Scott encourages visits during significant weekends such as Juneteenth, a time for reflection, celebration, and connection.
Supporting Black Women Entrepreneurs
Baltimore’s economic scene is enriched by a plethora of thriving Black-owned businesses, many founded and run by Black women. Establishments such as Stem & Vine, Urban Oyster, and Yeiboh Kitchen showcase the entrepreneurial spirit and culinary talent of this dynamic community. Jamyla Bennu’s Oyin Handmade exemplifies the thoughtful innovations that cater to the needs of travelers with natural hair, ensuring care and creativity.
Mayor Scott passionately supports these entrepreneurs, recognizing that the success of Black women in business directly correlates with the economic health of the city. He urges the community to rally behind these women, especially during challenging economic times and vows to uplift them through advocacy and support.
