Diaspora.Black: Pioneering Afrotourism in Europe

In a bold move, Diaspora.Black, a platform dedicated to connecting travelers with Afro-centric experiences, has officially launched its operations in the European market, establishing a base in Lisbon, Portugal. This strategic expansion signifies a significant milestone for the startup, which is simultaneously preparing for a Series A funding round slated for 2026 to advance its growth plans further.

A Shift in Focus

According to Carlos Humberto, the founder and CEO of Diaspora.Black, the idea of internationalization had been a gradual process, albeit somewhat scattered. The platform already operated across 18 countries, effectively bridging the gap between travelers and local hosts. In 2023, the startup opened an office in the United States. However, Carlos noted that the initial plan had shifted. “The North American market is very structured, but we felt that it was not yet the time to focus our efforts there,” he explained.

Portugal, despite not being on the startup’s initial radar as a viable Afrotourism destination, emerged as a surprising yet promising choice. Carlos’s experiences in Lisbon opened his eyes to rich historical narratives often overlooked by conventional tourism. His adventures outside mainstream tourist trails unveiled a treasure trove of African heritage experiences that remain unexplored and disconnected from potential travelers.

Community Engagement and Validation

To gauge local interest, Diaspora.Black organized a meeting focused on Afrotourism in Portugal. Initial expectations pegged attendance at around 25 people; however, over 100 individuals showed up, including leaders from the tourism sector, government officials, and diplomatic representatives. This overwhelming response validated the decision to establish a local operation.

The company is in its early stages of formalizing its Portuguese presence and building a dedicated team. The focus is on collaboration and community engagement, setting the groundwork for future sustainable tourism initiatives.

Structuring the Operation

In its initial phase, Diaspora.Black is prioritizing a B2B (Business-to-Business) and B2G (Business-to-Government) operating model. This approach aims to develop and structure the Afrotourism market in Portugal. The platform plans to create diverse tourism products, provide necessary training, conduct marketing initiatives, and coordinate with public policies to foster a supportive ecosystem for Afrotourism.

Conversations have commenced with local organizations, including Lisbon’s regional tourism body, to create a strategic roadmap for this niche. Carlos emphasizes that the goal is to integrate technology with market development, ultimately enhancing the Afrotourism experience for both travelers and local communities.

Portugal as a Strategic Hub

Portugal’s geographical positioning is viewed as advantageous. Carlos describes the country as a “crossroads” that connects Europe, Africa, and Latin America. This location not only facilitates the influx of international tourists to Brazil but also strengthens intercontinental ties within the African diaspora.

This expansion plays a vital role in Diaspora.Black’s overarching strategy to establish itself as a leader in Afrotourism. In addition to being a marketplace for Afro-centric experiences—ranging from accommodations to curated itineraries—the company functions as a Destination Management Company (DMC), focusing on structuring and executing tourism offerings.

Community Development and Training

Diaspora.Black is dedicated to developing unique methodologies to empower communities, train local travel agents, and craft engaging tourism products that resonate with cultural narratives. Collaborative projects with institutions like BNDES, IDB, and CAF showcase the company’s commitment to fostering economic development in regions tied to black culture.

The core mission extends beyond merely arranging trips; the startup aims to cultivate underdeveloped markets. Carlos points out that Diaspora.Black actively contributes to strengthening the Afrotourism industry in various countries. This involves everything from crafting compelling narratives to training local professionals and designing effective public policies, all crucial for transforming cultural stories into viable tourism products.

Current Developments and Future Goals

With the international expansion underway, Diaspora.Black is pivoting toward a new funding cycle, eyeing a Series A round targeted at $3 million (approximately R$15 million). This round follows a previous investment of R$600 thousand from Vox Capital, which played a crucial role in sustaining the company during the challenging pandemic period.

Carlos highlights the need for scaling technology investment to bolster sales and outreach. The company has already doubled its revenue in recent years and aspires to replicate this achievement in 2026, aiming for R$18 million in revenue.

Plans extend past the establishment of operations in Portugal, with ambitions to enhance international tourist flows. This includes attracting visitors to Brazil and facilitating connections to diverse landscapes across the African diaspora.

A Vision for Global Impact

Ultimately, Diaspora.Black seeks to be recognized as a global reference in Afrotourism. The company aims to work closely with government entities and multilateral organizations to establish robust frameworks for the sector across various countries. “We are not just taking an idea, but a market that has already been tested and structured in Latin America, the Caribbean and the United States,” Carlos concludes, emphasizing the potential for genuine economic development rooted in cultural richness.

As the startup navigates this pivotal growth phase, its commitment to fostering authentic African heritage and experiences promises to reshape the future of tourism in Europe and beyond.
