Grand Rapids, MI — This weekend, the city is set to embrace a celebration that pays homage to Black pride, history, and creativity. The Eta Pi Sigma Rhoer Club of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is excited to host its third annual event dedicated to recognizing and uplifting Black excellence. The celebration will take place on Saturday, February 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Ottawa Hills High School, located at 2055 Rosewood Ave. SE.

Tickets for the event are reasonably priced at $10, available for purchase online or at the door on the day of the event. For students eager to join the festivities, admission is free with a valid student ID; those without ID can still participate for just $3. Organizers can be reached at 616-528-4117 for anyone interested in obtaining physical tickets.

Described as “more than a show,” this celebration promises a thoughtfully curated blend of performances, visual art, and historical tributes that honor the profound achievements and cultural legacy of African Americans. It’s a fantastic opportunity for community members to immerse themselves in a vibrant expression of Black culture.

The Eta Pi Sigma Rhoer Club and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. are deeply committed to uplifting Black youth and amplifying community voices. Chapter president Danika Houston emphasizes the importance of youth involvement: “We wanted to really focus on the youth to get them more involved,” she stated. This event not only showcases young talent but also provides a nurturing environment for their creativity.

Ottawa Hills High School is not only hosting the event but also playing a significant role by facilitating youth contributions. The school’s choir will perform stirring pieces such as “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” often referred to as the Black national anthem, alongside the soulful spiritual “Wade in the Water.” Additionally, various artworks created by students will be on display, adding a personal touch to the event.

Houston highlights the importance of showcasing local talent, which embodies the spirit of the event. Attendees can look forward to an array of performances, including spoken word poetry, dance, singing, and musical acts that reflect the rich tapestry of Black history. These performances aim to educate, inspire, and entertain, creating a dynamic atmosphere for all participants.
