Celebrating Black History Month at Millcreek Common

MILLCREEK, Utah — This February, Millcreek Common is alive with the vibrant spirit of Black History Month, showcasing a rich tapestry of art, performances, and programming dedicated to honoring Black heritage and local talent. As the community comes together, the celebration offers a platform for both reflection and creativity, encouraging everyone to engage with the stories and contributions of Black individuals in the area.

An Artistic Journey with Michelle Pace

At the helm of the exhibit entitled “Shades of Community” is curator Michelle Pace, who has been immersed in the world of art since her childhood. Her passion was ignited by a memorable teacher, Miss Wanzer, who played a pivotal role in Pace’s early artistic development. “My art teacher in school, God rest her soul, actually used to put my things in shows under her name because I was nine, so I couldn’t be in the show,” Pace reminisces. “They would win contests, and then she’d come back and I’d get the prizes.”

This formative experience has shaped Pace’s desire to uplift fellow artists by providing them with opportunities to showcase their work. The current exhibit offers a welcoming space for Black artists to present their creations, with a particular focus on encouraging them to explore new skills and showcase pieces that have never been displayed before. “I just wanted to encourage the artists to show themselves in this exhibit,” she emphasizes, highlighting the importance of self-expression in the creative process.

A Celebration with Deep Roots

The “Shades of Community” exhibit is part of a broader initiative taking place at Millcreek City Hall, celebrating Black History Month through a variety of enriching events. Notably, the city’s historical ties to Black settlements run deep. Mayor Cheri Jackson notes, “Millcreek is a very diverse community, and we have been since our very founding. Some of the first Black settlements were here in Millcreek: Samuel and Amanda Chambers settled here in 1875.”

This rich history underscores the significance of recognizing and honoring Black contributions to the community, both past and present.

Community Engagement and Activities

Throughout February, Millcreek has hosted an array of activities aimed at fostering community spirit and education. Residents and visitors have participated in engaging experiences such as a scavenger hunt, insightful panel discussions, and history exhibits, all designed to celebrate Black history and culture. Planning events of this nature is essential in a state where the African American population comprises only 3%, as noted by Millcreek’s special events planner, Miriam Dickerson. “I think it’s important that we have these moments to show up together in community and show up for community,” she affirms.

The various events provide a platform for dialogue and connection, helping to bridge gaps and foster understanding among diverse groups.

Looking Toward the Future

Pace envisions a future where the creative celebrations of Black heritage extend beyond the confines of Black History Month. Her aspiration is to cultivate a nurturing environment for artists, echoing the support she received from her own mentor. “I want to be able to be the Miss Wanzer to someone else, and to a lot of somebody else’s to let this grow,” she expresses, highlighting her dedication to fostering creativity and representation year-round.

This initiative exemplifies how art and culture can serve as powerful vehicles for both individual expression and communal celebration, reinforcing the importance of representation and the ongoing narrative of Black history within the Millcreek community.
